Artist Statement
I’ve always loved an adventure! Whether exploring Incan architecture of Peru, studying whales in the Azores, or doing a deep dive into Argentine tango, I’ve enjoyed countless opportunities to appreciate the beauty and wonder of this world. Immersion in nature and dance, in particular, take me to my happy place. I recently retired from a career in architecture in Charleston, SC and have time to pursue new passions.
And one of those is Art. Taking classes at the College of Charleston and with local teachers, I’ve been introduced to numerous techniques, styles and types of media. I’m learning to see my world differently, pay attention to the shapes and colors and wonder “How could I express this?”. I enjoy experimenting with various media and discovering what is beautiful and what is diabolic about each of them. I look forward to becoming less literal and more freely expressive in my practice of visual art.
To enhance my study of art, I volunteer as a docent at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston. This has given me the chance to meet visiting artists, hear about their art and influences and to more deeply appreciate their work. I frequent local museums, galleries, art walks and art stores. I’ve enjoyed three trips with Wild Hair Adventures, a group that fosters creativity, soulfulness and hilarity! I also love volunteering with a number of environmental groups: litter sweeps, restoring local marsh grasses and oyster beds, and fighting for environmental protections by state legislature. I’m on the board of the local Sierra Club and regularly go on Sierra Club service trips. These activities deepen my love for nature and inspire me to absorb and express its beauty in art.
